Merit scholarships at RIT are awarded in recognition of outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements, regardless of financial need. Some students who are awarded merit scholarships choose not to apply for need-based financial aid, or do not qualify for that type of aid. Other students receive merit scholarships as part of a financial aid award.

General Guidelines

General guidelines pertaining to merit scholarships at RIT include the following:

  • All admission application files are reviewed by the Undergraduate Admissions Office to determine each student's eligibility for RIT merit scholarships. In most cases, a separate merit scholarship application is not required (see chart). Merit scholarships are available to full-time students only.
  • Students who meet the eligibility requirements for more than one merit scholarship will be selected to receive only the highest valued scholarship of those available. (see chart for exceptions)
  • All RIT merit scholarships are renewable contingent upon the student maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.8 or higher (measured at the end of each academic year), along with any additional requirements outlined at the time the award is made.
  • Entering students selected to receive an RIT merit scholarship will be mailed a notification letter specifying the scholarship amount and renewal requirements. Students who are reviewed but not selected for merit scholarships will not receive a written notification from the Admissions Office.

Freshman Scholarships

Presidential Scholarships

High school seniors with outstanding academic credentials can receive substantial merit scholarships through RIT’s Presidential Scholarship Program. RIT will award Presidential Scholarships to more than 500 entering freshmen this year, with an anticipated four-year value exceeding $14 million. Financial need is not considered in selecting RIT’s Presidential Scholarship winners. In order to be considered for a Presidential Scholarship, students must complete their application for admission by February 1 .

Applications received by this date will be reviewed by our Presidential Scholarship Committee to identify candidates who have achieved greater than or equal to:

  • A score of 1270 on the critical reading and mathematics sections of the SAT or ACT composite of 28 and a secondary school rank in the top 20 percent at the end of the junior year, or
  • A score of 1220 on the critical reading and mathematics sections of the SAT or ACT composite of 27 and a secondary school rank in the top 10 percent at the end of the junior year.

The Scholarship Committee will review applicants from secondary schools that do not calculate class rank on an individual basis for possible selection.

Each student who meets the initial selection criteria will be given further consideration for a Presidential Scholarship. Awards may range in value from $5,000 to $12,500 per academic year ($1,666 to $4,166 for each quarter of full-time study). Determination of the specific scholarship amount will be based upon the student’s academic record, recommendations, activities, and requirements for their intended major. Portfolio evaluations will also be considered for applicants to art, design, and crafts programs. Meeting initial test score and rank criteria does not guarantee final selection.

National Merit Scholarship Program

The Scholarship Selection Committee will give special consideration to students who have been recognized for their academic potential by the:

  • National Merit Scholarship Program
  • National Achievement Scholarship Program
  • National Hispanic Scholars Program

RIT will automatically award Presidential and Merit Scholarships with a combined valued of up to $14,500 to students who have been recognized as semi-finalists or finalists in any of these three national scholarship competitions.

Freshman Achievement Scholarships

RIT offers several types of Achievement Scholarships to recognize freshman applicants who have excelled in academic and extracurricular activities and demonstrated special talents or abilities. Special awards are available for students seeking admission to Art, Design, Crafts, Business, Liberal Arts, and Hospitality programs, and to students in other majors (see chart).
